During their engagement Laurence was quickly put into her place. Her duties were hard but she acquiesced without a word of protest because the prize of the marriage was worth it.
An hour before the wedding service was to begin, Raoul, her husband-to-be, fixed metal cuffs to Laurence's ankles. It was like this that she was to present herself at the little village church.
A large crowd of local people gathered in the square outside the church after the service and awaited the emergence of the newly-weds. A great clamour greeted them when they finally emerged. Raoul raised his hands for silence and, in a few words, thanked the crowd, which comprised mostly of his personal staff and people from the village, for attending.
Then, in a tone of great authority, he turned and instructed Laurence to "Quickly, pull up your skirt above your waist. I want everyone to see your underwear." Crimson with shame and with her lips trembling, Laurence hoisted her dress as ordered.
Raoul again addressed the crowd. "You are all invited to the chateau this evening for the auctioning of the bride's garter, and yes, her panties too. What's more, the lucky winners will be allowed to remove their purchases themselves."
This pronouncement was greeted with an overwhelming ovation, since every man had had his eyes glued to the elegant, if scanty, undergarments of the horrified and humiliated bride.
That evening she endured a seemingly endless two hours of humiliation, for after she had been stripped of her panties by a florid faced rustic, she was forced to remain bare from the waist down for the rest of evening. The entertainment was enjoyed by all of the guests, especially as her garter belt, her stockings and, finally, her bra were sold and enthusiastically removed.
